Information for Researchers

The Assiniboine Park Zoo accepts proposals for research projects from external scientists. All applications are subject to an internal review (in addition to your institution’s own review). When considering an application to the Zoo, please remember that animal welfare is our number one priority.

Application Process

Applications are received by the Conservation and Research department who will check them for completeness and may provide direct comment back to the applicant without going to the committee. Decisions to disallow research made by the Director of Zoological Operations and/or the Head of Conservation and Research are final and cannot be appealed.

If the application is complete it will be directed to either the Animal Welfare Committee (all research that involves manipulation of animals or presenting stimuli), the Animal Enrichment Committee (research in to animal enrichment), or Park Directors (research on Zoo visitors). The Research and Ethics Review Committee will then take recommendations from these groups, assess the scientific merit, and recommend a decision to the Director of Zoological Operations. This decision will also be communicated to the Principle Applicant. In some cases modifications to the application will be required for the research to proceed.

Please download, complete and submit the appropriate application form below. (Right click and select "save link as" to download the form.)

All other research related inquiries may be directed to conservationresearch@assiniboinepark.ca.

Research and Ethics Review Committee

The Assiniboine Park Zoo Research and Ethics Review Committee is comprised of Conservation and Research staff, zookeepers, University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba researchers, veterinarians, and members of the public.

The Committee provides guidance and ethical oversight, ensuring that the highest standards of scientific rigour and animal care are maintained.
